Living in Lugano means that you live every day looking up at mountains, and every night looking at their blinking lights. I have lived here for four years and–until today–had never climbed a single one. Not really surprizing if you know me. I don’t enjoy doing things that require a lot of energy, or being away from the internet for to long. So mountain hikes? Not really my thing.
All this said, much like leaving without jumping from Valle Verzaca, I thought it would be inexcusable for me not to climb one of Lugano’s mountains. So with really only one weekend left before graduation, and nice weather, I kept my promise to Pauli and Greg and today we hiked Monte Boglia.
We left Airone at 09:10 and headed down to the train station to take TPL bus #2 to Lanchetta, then transfer and take TPL bus #12 to Brè Paese. At about 10:30 we started our climb up Monte Boglia.
I haven’t really ever done this sort of thing before. I have climbed Flattop in Anchorage, but that was years ago and I don’t remember it being difficult at all. Boglia, on the other hand, was quite hard for me. It took a total of 4hrs for me to do a 3hrs hike. And yes, I did get stuck in a tree for a while, but I was slower than everyone else. I appreciate Pauli and Greg for being patient enough to wait and pause for me. If they hadn’t been there I would have given up on the entire endeavor early on.
At 14:30 we broke out of the forest and made it up to the 1,516 meters high tippy top. The view was beautiful. We could see all of Lugano, Gandra, and other neighboring cities that we didn’t know the names to. It would have been perfect had we brought a picnic with us, but we forced our hungry stomachs to be quiet so that our eyes could enjoy the view.
Up top there is nothing but three benches, a cross, and a whole lot of flies. We stayed a bit, enough to take a couple of photos, and then headed back down at 15:00. The climb down was a lot easier to manage, and a lot quicker. Only about 1.5hrs. But it was not better for our legs. I have blisters on my big toes to prove it.
Finally out of the forest, we waited at the bus stop and eventually made it back to civilization. Exhausted. Starving.
We inhaled some food at a nearby restaurant and now we are home. Originally, I thought that this adventure was only going to take half a day, and that I would have time to work on my thesis or study for finals. But we just came back and are too tired to do much of anything. I started editing the vlog, and Pauli and I watched the new TBBT episode. Our muscles ache and I can’t walk properly because of my dumb toe blisters. I’m afraid of what we are going to feel like in the morning.
MY VLOG FROM THAT DAY:
Three WTK concerts in 1 month. Best idea ever!
This past Saturday (28 April 2012) Pauli and I drove to Zurich to see them in concert again. It was part of Loudfest and held in Komplex No. 457. We left Lugano at around 09:40 and had a really pleasant sunny drive in our rented red convertable SmartCar. Just the drive there was magical. We arrived in Zurich and parked around 13:00, and headed over to the venue where we waited with some other concert-goers/Simple Plan fans until the doors opened and we were allowed inside. Before the concert, WTK did walk by and Pauli got a high-five from Danny.
The concert itself was amazingly great as always. However, Travis’ universal song joke stops being funny after the first time. ;P After WTK performed, Pauli and I wondered around for a while going outside for air, listening to Zebrahead, and waiting for Scooter to be at the merch table so that he could give me my poster back. At around 20:00 Pauli and I decided that we should leave and start our 2.5hr drive back home to Lugano. We were a little sad not to have had the oppurtunty to say hi to WTK like in Milan or Eckbolsheim. As Pauli was putting the final period on her note, which we were going to leave on their van, Travis stepped out of the venue.
We talked with him for a while, Coley and Yoshi. Pauli and I had the unique experience to just stand around there near the crew exit and talk to Such Gold and the other members of WTK. It was really nice to just hangout with everyone. I hope we didn’t seem too awkward.
We had a wonderful time, and if my NEVs (non-existant viewers) ever have the chance to see them DO IT. It’s such a great show! They’ll be in the States soon so buy tickets. Warped Tour perhaps?
Apart from getting the parking ticket, I would do it all again in a second!
I know that his post is very choppy, so watch my vlog from that day to fill in the holes:

This weekend, Pauli and I did something a bit more outside the norm that we usually do on the weekend. We decided to go to a concert festival in Eckbolsheim, France. Since I’d never heard of Eckbolsheim, I expected it to be a barn in a field. I was wrong. I was a big orange barn in a field. We went there to see We The Kings perform. Pauli and I saw them in Milan about a month ago, but we wanted to see them again and hoped to meet them.
As the picture can show, we got to meet them! I even got to meet Charles Trippy, who wasn’t at the Milano show because he had discovered a brain tumor. But thankfully, his surgery went well and I was finally able to meet him: making me feel like all my time spent watching YouTube wasn’t really for no reason.
The band was really cool and Pauli and I had a great time. It was so amazing that we are going to do it again next week, but this time in Zurich.
It’s hard for me to put into words what meeting Charles meant to me, without sounding creepy or strange. It is just amazing that someone like that can be so nice and have such a great life. It proved to me that you don’t have to be a dick to be successful. And he also has such great people around him and in his life. I just hope that I’ll be able to be so fortunate.
